I’m glad people are telling you the cruelty involved in your meal. But bringing your young children to a restaurant like this is sickening, you’re teaching them that killing things is okay! Be it an animal or a human, you’re teaching your children to be killers.

To “djbethell” and “Letseatlivedogs” – before you decide to wag your Western-centric finger and lecture Mr. Woon and an entire culture of people about their way of life, be sure to get your facts right.

Octupi are invertebrates. It is next to impossible to know if octopi feel “pain” in the way humans define it – no one in the scientific community knows for sure because creatures with no backbones do not perceive and sense their environment in the same manner as mammals. Most of the papers say “NO” but really its more of an educated guess than anything else.

Next time you decide to use examples like cutting a dog’s leg or Jewish death camps, be sure to know what you are saying or else you end up looking stupid.

How can you support eating live animals? Watching that video and hearing your enthusiasm for it just raised my stress level. Just because we can dominate other animals doesn’t mean we should.

I love Anthony Bourdain, and I’m a big proponent of being a brave and adventurous eater as well as not wasting perfectly edible parts. But the live octopus tradition, especially the horribly cruel way they are slaughtered at table, is one we could do without. Just as there is no reason to waste perfectly good food, there is also no reason to celebrate our dominance over the creatures we eat by torturing them to death, especially at the table. Just because cats play with their food doesn’t mean we have to.

Octopuses are said to have the same intelligence and awareness levels as dogs. If we cut off a dog’s legs at a dinner table and scarfed them down gleefully while the animal was still writhing in pain, there would be protests galore. Just because we can’t hear their screams doesn’t mean it’s not still a horrible practice. We owe the animals we eat a little compassion in their deaths.
